The ASA National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships 2015 took place in Gloucester from the 4th to the 6th December. 19 swimmers from Telford Aqua Swimming Club descended on the GL1 Leisure Centre to battle it out with competitors from 31 other clubs from across the UK.
Telford Aqua entered two events; the 12 and Under and 19 and Under Team events.
The 12 and Under Team of Eliza Bailey, Hattie Beath, Libby Craven, Sophie Engelke, Mia Harris, Hannah Knowles, Christie Morrow, Sian Rotchell, Eva Stubbs and Megan Suffell; performed a routine to music from the film Despicable Me and finished 7th in a field of 17, with a score of 50.5000. Team Coach Sarah Craven said, “7th in the Country is a fantastic achievement, we are so proud! Everyone really performed their best and delivered a polished swim.”
The 19 and under squad’s performance was to music from the film, Burlesque. The swimmers, Holly Bourne, Amy Clarke, Chloe Cowie, Olivia Griffiths, Charlotte Lucas, Ella Morrow, Grace Suffell, Megan Saville and Becky Wallace placed 13th in a very competitive category of 23. Their routine scored 54.167; a huge improvement on last year’s placing. Swimmer Megan Saville commented, “I am really proud of both of the Telford Aqua teams, competing on a National stage comes with a lot of pressure but we used that positive energy to deliver great swims. We have trained hard for this and it paid off.”
Both teams have been preparing for the National Age Groups since January; training two or three session a week. Swimmers have competed in events across the region as warm-up to this final competition of the season. The girls won gold medals at the Birmingham Novice Competition in May and the Crooked Spire Competition (Derbyshire) in June. Head Coach Sarah Waters said, “It has been a great year for Synchro at Telford Aqua. The swimmers have grown in confidence as well as technical ability. To see them perform at a National level is very special and plans are already in motion for next year’s routines.”
Swimmers from the Telford club are now focusing their efforts on the Club Championships in February.
Between events competitors were treated to a showcase from the England Talent Squad, the team included 2015 World Championship swimmers Genevieve Randall and Jodie Cowie as well as London 2012 Olympians Olivia Federici and Katie Clark.
Karen Thorpe, ASA Talent Development Officer for Synchronised Swimming, said: “It was wonderful to see so many competitors at the ASA National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships.
“The whole event was a fantastic showcase of national talent and it’s great to see so many great athletes coming through the England Programmes pathway. I’m excited to see what happens in 2016 with exciting competitions at all levels of our programme including the Olympic Games in Rio.”
